Day Of Dance: Team Cyber Exploring Designs

With designing for my second group I was particularly interested in looking into 80s power dressing and taking aspects to influence my designs. After an initial discussion the group wants the base to be grey office wear but with an art twist. The 3 characters portrayed in the piece are and artist, dancer and a designer so my idea was what would each of these people do to a suit that they had to wear to an office job.

I wanted each character to be distinct to the artistic field so the artist covered in paint the dancer with headphones and the designer with tape measures and safety pins attached to her jacket. This very detail orientated form of designing is something new that I haven’t really explored before so I found this a really new and exciting project. I discussed my ideas throughly with my group and found that they were very open to let me make final decisions and allowed me to take charge which was different to the previous group who had a much more input into what they wanted to be costumed in. Therefore I had to adapt to the different group styles. From this I learnt how important it is to allow your group to get their ideas across fully and be able to show them visually what your ideas are and how to combine the two together.

As each character was going to be wearing a suit I had to find different ways of changing and adapting the suits so each were different and fitted each character. I experimented with different styles of blazers, trousers and shirts whilst still only working with grey and white as a colour palette. I found I was able to be more creative with my styling a designing process when not having to worry about colour and pattern but expressing each individual through small accessories and design elements.
