Production Practice: Day Of Dance Initial Design Process

For the production practice module I will be designing for 2 dance groups as part of their day of dance. Each group will have a different concept and theme that they are choreographing for. My role is to design and source/make costumes for them to perform in.

The 2 groups that I am designing for are Team TikTok and Team Cyber one is heavily influenced by Kpop whilst the other is influenced by suits and contrast between dull muted colours and bright bold colours.

I started my design process by having a discussion with both groups about there Initial ideas and where they wanted to take their concepts as each dancer as characters. I found working with 2 separate groups a challenge at first as I was having to split my creative ideas into individual areas and having to focus on creating designs that were completely separate for the 2 groups. However working in this way enabled me to practice my time management skills and my ability to communicate effectively with a variety of people. From these initial discussions I then curated mouldboards for each concept in order to help visualise the ideas stated from both groups. I find mood boards to be an incredibly helpful form of research for me as they help me visualise and notice themes and patterns within a concept that I struggle to get from a piece of written research.

I found that through this Initial discussion process each group had a very basic idea of where they wanted to start and it was my job to make those ideas possible and explain the logistics of creating these ideas. This allowed my to take on somewhat of the role of a supervisor which is an area which I have little to no experience in so it was a really good learning opportunity for me and a new way of working that I can now say I have practice in.
